Film Certification Appellate Tribunal Abolished: Vishal Bhardwaj Calls It A 'Sad Day For Cinema', Richa Chadha And Hansal Mehta Express Their Disappointment
Film Certification Appellate Tribunal has been abolished. Filmmakers Vishal Bhardwah, Guneet Monga, Hansal Mehta and actress Richa Chadha took to Twitter to express their disappointment over the change.
The Film Certification Appellate Tribunal (FCAT) has been dissolved by the Ministry of Law and Justice. The Ministry of Law and Justice issued a notice regarding the change that has been implemented. For the uninitiated, FCAT was established in 1983, and it has proved crucial in the release of many films as filmmakers approach the body to appeal against CBFC orders. Given the change, filmmakers will now have to approach the High Court directly to address their grievances.
From Hansal Mehta, Richan Chadha to Vishal Bhardwaj took to the Twitter page and expressed disappointment over the change. Vishal Bhardwaj took to his page and called it a sad day for cinema. He tweeted, "Such a sad day for cinema. FILM CERTIFICATION APPELLATE TRIBUNAL ABOLISHED". Richa Chadha reacted to his tweet and expressed her disappointment.
Hansal Mehta tweeted, "Do the high courts have a lot of time to address film certification grievances? How many film producers will have to approach the courts? The FCAT discontinuation feels arbitrary and is definitely restrictive. Why this unfortunate timing? Why take this decision at all?"

Guneet Monga also reacted and wrote, "How does something like this happen? Who decides?" For the unversed, in the recent past, FCAT (Film Certification Appellate Tribunal) has been instrumental in granting clearance for films like Udta Punja, Lipstick Under My Burkha, Babumoshai Bandookbaaz among others.
